Description
Valley Farmhouse is a farmhouse built in two distinct sections: an early 19th century front range and a parallel rear range that consists of a three-cell open hall house dating from around 1500, which has been retained as service accommodation. The front range is constructed of red brick and features a hipped plain tiled roof with rear chimneys made of red brick. It is two storeys high with three windows. The window openings are from the 19th century and have cambered heads, with 4-light 20th century casements that include transoms. A prominent two-storey entrance porch has a parapet gable and obelisk finials, and a large round-headed window illuminates the staircase hall behind. An additional lower porch is attached at the front, featuring a similar gable and an arched opening, leading to a six-panelled inner doorway.
The rear range is also two storeys high and is timber framed with plastering. It has a hipped pantiled roof with an axial chimney made of red brick. The open hall features an open truss with a cambered tie beam and one of a pair of large chamfered arch-braces that rise from a pilaster shaft. There are mutilated pairs of 4-centred arched service doorways. Although most of the original partition walling has been removed, the arch windbraced studwork on the external walls remains largely intact. There is evidence of a crownpost roof, and the smoke-blackened rafters have been reused in the 19th century roof. An upper floor was inserted into the hall around 1600.
