Description
This barn, located 20 meters southeast of Doveshill Farmhouse, was built around 1600 as a stable range or granary with eight bays. It was extended by two bays in the 18th or early 19th century, at which point the original structure was converted into a barn. The barn is timber-framed and weatherboarded, featuring some 18th-century plasterwork. It originally had a thatched roof, which was replaced with corrugated iron in the mid-20th century. A central midstrey was added to the north, and a doorway was introduced in the east gable in the 20th century. The barn showcases good quality close-studding with tension stud-bracing. The tie-beams were formerly arch-braced, but most braces were renewed with knees in the 18th or 19th century. The roof has a good side-purlin structure, with the lower tier of purlins butted and the upper tier wind-braced and clasped with reduced principals. All eight bays of the original building included an upper floor, which was removed in the 18th or 19th century, although the center bay has some early alterations, including doorways that have since been blocked on each side wall. The two later bays still retain an upper floor, though it is in poor condition.
