Description
Old East End Hall is a former farmhouse dating from the early 17th century, with a service wing added in the mid-17th century. The building is timber-framed and plastered, featuring cable-pattern pargetting in large panels. It has plaintiled roofs with axial chimneys made of red brick, which were mainly rebuilt in the 19th and 20th centuries. The hall is two storeys high with attics and has a three-cell cross-passage entrance plan for the main range, alongside a three-cell service cross-wing of two storeys.
The windows include late 18th century and early 19th century small-pane casements, some with transoms, as well as several windows from around 1630 that have ovolo-and cavetto-moulded mullions, including one with old square and hexagonal paned leaded glazing. The entrance features a battened and boarded door with an early 20th century open gabled porch supported by posts. Inside, there are notable original features such as a complete plank-and-muntin cross-passage screen with hollow-chamfered muntins, close-studding, open fireplaces, and a wind-braced butt-purlin roof. There is also a probable medieval moat that has been partially infilled.
