Description

Laurel Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the mid-16th century, with alterations made in the early 17th century. It has a three-cell plan and stands two storeys tall. The building is timber-framed and plastered, topped with a glazed pantiled roof. There is an external end chimney made of 17th-century red brick on the left side and an axial chimney with a 19th-century rebuilt shaft. The first storey features three-light casement windows from the 19th century, while the ground floor has 20th-century replacements with transoms below.

The entrance door is an early 19th-century six-panelled design, with the upper pair of panels being glazed. A 19th-century glazed plaintiled porch leads into the house, where the plain heavy framing from the 16th century is exposed internally. Notable interior features include a massive chamfered binding beam in the hall and an arch-braced tiebeam at the open truss above. The roof structure includes a crownpost roof, with the central crown post being square and chamfered.

In the hall, there is a wide lintelled open fireplace made of narrow buff bricks. An impressive well staircase was added in the early 17th century at the rear of the cross passage, featuring closely spaced turned balusters and square newels with complex moulded finials. In the 18th or 19th century, the pitch of the front roof slope was reduced after the front wall was raised by about a metre. The farmhouse is shown as Green Farmhouse on historical maps.
