Description
Pond Cottage and Sussex Cottage are two houses that were originally built as one in the late 16th century and later subdivided with alterations in the early 19th century. There were further alterations around 1980. The houses have a three-cell plan and are two storeys high. They are timber framed and plastered, with a concrete pantiled roof that was once thatched, and an axial chimney made of early 19th-century gault brick. The windows are small-pane casements from the mid and late 20th century. There are single-storey extensions from the 20th century at either end, which contain the entrance doors to both houses. The exposed studding is of good quality and shows evidence of diamond mullioned windows. Inside, the early 19th-century roof retains an original structure that is half-hipped at both ends and features a vestigial queenpost system. Pond Cottage includes the parlour cell; the original chimney between the hall and parlour was removed in the 19th century and replaced by a new chimney in a central position between the cottages. The building is included on the register despite the 20th-century alterations due to its 16th-century core and as an interesting example of how an earlier house was subdivided into cottages in the 19th century.
