Description
New Bells Cottage is a house dating from the mid to late 16th century, built in two stages. It has a three-cell plan and stands two storeys high. The structure is timber-framed and plastered, topped with a pantiled roof that was once thatched. There are two axial chimneys made of red brick; one has a rebuilt mid-20th century shaft, while the other dates from the 19th century. The windows are mainly early 20th century, three-light casements, with two 18th century casements on the first storey. The entrance features a 20th century framed and boarded door with a cantilevered canopy made of plain tiles.
At the right-hand end of the cottage, there is a two-bay section that includes an open truss at the gable, indicating it may have originally extended further to the right. The main section of the house, built around 1570, showcases good unmoulded framing, including a cambered arch-braced tie-beam, chamfered floor joists laid flat, and a lintelled open fireplace. There is also part of a cross-passage screen featuring planks and chamfered muntins.
