Description
Gardiner's Cottage is a former farmhouse that has been converted into two dwellings. The building dates from the late 16th century, with a cross-wing on the right, while the stack and the left cell are from the early to mid-17th century. It is constructed from timber framing and rendered, topped with a thatched roof. The cottage features two cells with a lobby entry and stands two storeys high, with a small attic on the left. The windows are modern casements from the 20th century, featuring horizontal glazing bars, alongside a small 17th-century ovolo-mullioned upper window located in front of the stack. There are also two 20th-century boarded doors. The stack has an axial shaft made of narrow brick, and there is a pantiled brick lean-to at the rear.
Inside, the cross-wing showcases exposed full-height studding, a blocked diamond-mullioned window, and signs of other windows that have been removed. The joists are plain and set flat, with a newel stair positioned by the stack and a side purlin roof. The left cottage has undergone more extensive modernisation, featuring smaller plain flat joists, a good open fireplace, and a clasped purlin roof.
