Description

Gardiner's Hall is a former farmhouse dating from the mid 17th century, featuring two wings that form an L-shaped plan. The east wing is dated 1666 and bears the initials 'G' over 'EB'. The building underwent early 20th-century alterations. It is timber framed, with parts plastered. The south front, altered in the early 20th century, has a ground floor made of red brick and an upper floor with imitation studding and brick nogging. The south gable end of the east wing displays a projecting tie beam with vine trail carving, along with the date and initials. The roof is covered with plain tiles, and the building stands two storeys high with an attic.

The south front features four windows, which are sashes without glazing bars, with some being tripartite. There are two doorways: to the left is a notable 17th-century plank door with a studded panelled face; the ovolo-moulded doorframe is likely from around 1900. To the right is an 18th-century door with six raised fielded panels. Various casement windows, mostly of mid-20th-century standard type, are present on the north and east sides, including one slatted window on the north. The east wing contains an internal stack, with the base of the axial shaft featuring an inset panel and a moulded brick band. There is also a one-storey pantiled lean-to in the angle of the two wings.

Inside, the west range has a 17th-century panelled cross-partition that is not in its original position. The east wing contains a good early 18th-century panelled room, which was damaged in the 1980s by sandblasting. The interior has not been fully examined.
