Description
Cotton Hall is a manor farmhouse dating from the mid-17th century, with a facade added in the late 19th century. The building is timber framed and rendered, with the facade covered in red brick. It has a roof made of 20th-century clay plain tiles. The structure is arranged in a T-shape with a three-cell, lobby entry range and a contemporary wing at the rear. It stands two storeys tall with an attic. The windows are mainly casement style, featuring a three-light mullion and transom pattern with slender horizontal glazing bars and segmental arches. A one-storey, late 19th-century gabled brick porch is located at the front, which has a mid-20th-century oak door and a small circular window above it. The stack has a plain axial shaft, and there is a one-storey gault brick wing to the left.
Inside, the main range has an intact six-bay frame with plain studding and no visible bracing. The joists are set flat throughout, mostly plain, with those in the hall being chamfered. The service end was originally divided into two sections, with original trimming at the rear for a staircase. There is a 19th-century newel staircase by the stack and an oak attic stair at the service end. The stack is made of large bricks and appears to be a later rebuild. The roof features a lower row of substantial stepped butt purlins with straight wind bracing in the end bays, while the upper part of the roof is not visible. The two-bay rear wing has a similar roof structure. The building is surrounded by a medieval moat.
