Description

The Cottage is a building of probable 15th or early 16th century origin, with a 19th century addition set back to the right. It originally comprised one house, now divided into two dwellings. The left-hand portion represents the service end of a 16th century house, with the 19th century addition forming the right-hand section, renovated around 1985.

The construction is timber-framed, with old plasterwork to the left and a pargetted panelled render of around 1985 to the right. Some exposed timber framing is visible in the right-hand end wall. The 19th century work is in clay lump, similarly rendered. The roof is thatched, with a half-hip to the right, and incorporates 19th century pantiles. The building appears to have originally consisted of two cells, with a possible third cell to the left now lost. It has two storeys, with a small attic space. Small-paned casement windows are present, dating to the 19th and mid-20th centuries. A 19th century plank door is located within the original cross-entry on the left-hand side. Two mid-20th century battened plank doors are set on the right.

Internally, there is an original stack with a small red brick shaft, and a later stack at the junction with the 19th century addition. The service cell features widely-spaced studding with tension braces. A partition wall originally containing four-centred arched doorways remains within the hall. Joists have been reinstated, though in altered positions. The roof is likely a crown-post roof, though the collars and any collar purlin associated with the service end are missing. The interior of the left-hand dwelling has not been inspected.
