Description
Myrtle Cottage is a house with an attached disused shop and former smithy, likely built around 1745, as indicated by an oval cartouche with the date and initials "C" above and "+M" below. The left cross-wing features many reused components from the 15th century. The building has two storeys and is constructed of timber framing with a roughcast finish. It has a plaintiled roof, while the cross-wing has a pantiled roof. There are axial and end chimneys made of red brick, and the windows are small-pane casements from the 20th century. The side entrance door is a boarded door from the 19th century. The main range displays fully exposed timber framing from around 1745, while the wing also has exposed framing, including massive reused unchamfered floor joists and principal posts and tie-beams, all of 15th-century craftsmanship. A fireplace features a very deep reused cambered lintel from the 16th century. The attached shop and smithy to the left have a timber-framed core dating to around 1745 or possibly earlier but were remodeled in the 19th century. The shop includes a 19th-century boarded entrance door and a small-paned shop window; this part of the building was noted to be in poor condition at the time of the survey.
