Description

34, 36, and 38 Castle Street are three houses dating from around 1600, with later alterations. They feature a rendered and colourwashed timber frame, and the roof is covered with late 20th century concrete corrugated tiles at the front and slate at the rear. The buildings are two storeys high and have a three-window range.

The leftmost house, No. 38, has a late 18th century four-panelled door, while the doors to Nos. 34 and 36 are from the late 20th century. Each house has timber doorcases with hoods supported by pilasters. The central window is a 6/6 unhorned sash set within a flush frame, and the other two ground-floor windows are late 20th century casements. On the first floor, there is a central two-light 19th century casement, with one late 20th century casement on either side. The houses have a gabled roof with a ridge stack located to the right of centre and an internal gable-end stack on the east side.

At the rear, there is a full-length two-storey outshut from the 19th century made of clay lump and clad with mid-19th century painted brick, featuring 20th century windows. Inside, the frame has moderate scantling, with jowled principals, tie beams, and a clasped purlin roof that retains undiminished principals. There is an early 19th century stick-baluster staircase in No. 36, although it is not in its original position.
