Description
Skeets Green Cottage is a late 17th-century cottage located in Barham. It features a rendered timber-frame construction with a thatched roof and a projecting brick stack on the right gable end. The cottage has a two-unit cross-passage plan and is a single storey with an attic. The central entrance is a plank door, flanked by a two-light casement window on the left and a 20th-century window on the right. The exterior displays 20th-century decorative pargetting in panels, and there is a central eyebrow dormer with a small two-light casement.
To the right, there is a large projecting stack and a small lean-to with an attic single-light window. The left end has a wooden lean-to with a pantile roof and a two-light casement above it. At the rear, there is another two-light casement and a small wooden lean-to with a plank door. The eyebrow dormer at the rear also features a small two-light casement.
Inside, the cottage has tall panel framing with diagonal braces and massive wall posts that support bridging beams. There is an open fireplace with a bressumer, which has been slightly modified with a mantelpiece in front. The cottage also retains an early staircase and the original roof now has a plank ridge. This cottage is notably small for its period and remains unusually little altered.
