Description

Thimble Cottage and Well Yard comprises two houses built as a single entity, originating in the early 16th century or possibly earlier, with a wing added to the right side in the mid-19th century. The original range has two storeys and four window bays. The construction is timber-framed and plastered, with a pantiled roof that was formerly thatched. A chimney, likely dating from the 19th century or earlier, runs axially and has a plastered shaft. The windows are 20th-century casements, and the Thimble Cottage entrance features a 20th-century flush door with a glazed panel. Unmoulded timber framing is exposed at Well Yard, revealing heavy medieval floor joists and tension stud-braced walling, along with evidence of diamond mullioned windows. The right-hand gable of the original building is end-jettied, although this feature is now concealed by the 19th-century addition.
