Description

The White Horse Public House is a public house that dates from the early 19th century, with a core that dates back to 1694 or earlier. It features painted brickwork, except for the right-hand bay which encases timber-framing. The building has pantiled roofs and includes one gabled casement dormer. There are various plastered chimneys, including one axial chimney in the rear wing that has a sunk panel with the date 1694. The structure is two storeys high with attics and has three windows. The early 19th-century windows have cambered heads and consist of 3-light horizontally sliding casements with small panes, although some mid-20th-century casements and a splayed bay window are present at the ground storey. The entrance door, which is from the 19th century, is fielded panelled, and a flat 20th-century canopy extends over the bay window. To the left, adjacent to Church Road, there is a timber-framed 17th-century crosswing that has been significantly remodelled in the 19th century, featuring strongly jowled principal posts and exposed framing members. This crosswing may also date from 1694, but the chimney of this date may have been added to an earlier 17th-century building. Additionally, there is a flint-walled 19th-century extension at the rear that was incorporated with the earlier wing in the 20th century to create an occasions room.
