Description
This barn, located about 80 meters west-northwest of Westhorpe Hall, dates from the mid to late 16th century. It features a timber frame and is weatherboarded, topped with a steeply pitched asbestos roof. The structure consists of five bays with an aisle at the rear. There is a central cart entrance and a smaller cart exit in the continuous lean-to aisle at the back. Inside, the barn has close studding with a mid-rail and reverse curved tension braces in the upper part of the walls. The plates have edge halved scarf joints, and there are arched braces connecting the arcade posts to a re-used arcade plate and down to the aisle ties. Additional arched braces extend from the posts to the tie beams, which have largely been replaced by knees, collars, and halved principals clasping purlins, along with arched windbraces.
