Description

The barn to the west of Whatfield Hall dates from the late 16th century or early 17th century and has undergone alterations and extensions. It is a very large structure, weatherboarded, and currently has a roof made of corrugated asbestos sheet. A few small modern windows have been added.

Inside, the barn features seven bays of timber-frame construction with jowled posts and close studded walls. It has stout scantlings and shaped solid braces supporting most of the tie beams, although some have been replaced early on with arch braces. The roof is steeply pitched, supported by side purlins, collars, and wind braces. The stout scarf-jointed ground cill rests on a rendered brick foundation.
