Description
Franklins (newsagent) and Beam Ends are two dwellings and a shop, likely built in 1701, as indicated by a plaque over the entrance, although they incorporate many components from the 16th century. The building has two storeys and follows a three-cell lobby-entrance plan. It features a timber-framed and plastered structure, with the first floor jettied to the front elevation. The roof, glazed with pantiles, dates from the late 19th or 20th century; the original roof would have been more steeply pitched. There are modern red brick chimneys, primarily 19th-century small-pane casements, and one small-pane sash window. A mid-20th-century bay shop window is supported on brackets, and there is a 19th-century four-panelled door set in a porch that is recessed beneath the jetty. Inside, primary-braced studding and other 18th-century carpentry features are exposed, alongside heavy principal members that have been reused from a 16th-century house, including jetty framing.
