Description

Walcot is a house that was once the parish workhouse, featuring two phases of construction from the 16th century and possibly earlier, with an addition around 1700 on the right side, creating a single long range. The building is timber framed and plastered, with a roof over the 16th-century section covered in interlocking concrete pantiles, while the later addition has clay pantiles. It stands two storeys high with an attic and has five windows, which are 19th-century two-light casements with small panes. There are two doorways with mid-20th-century doors; one has an open porch and the other is topped with a flat hood. Inside, there is an internal stack within the earlier range. The main part of the house consists of four bays, with the fourth bay on the right being a mid-16th-century addition, and the stack in the adjacent bay added later. Both phases exhibit good first-floor studding, featuring curved braces at the earlier end and reverse-curved braces in the fourth bay. Much of the original structure on the ground floor is concealed. The roof, which has queen posts over both phases, is contemporary with the fourth bay. The section added around 1700 retains intact studs, with the main posts at the gable end displaying ogee-corbelled heads. The roof over this section features two rows of stepped diminished butt purlins.
