Description
The stable located 20 metres northeast of Hill House dates from the mid-17th century and features a granary above. It is two storeys tall, constructed of red brick in English Bond, with unusually thick bricks for its period. There is a band of moulded brick at the first floor level. The stable has Dutch gables at either end, which were rebuilt in the 19th century, likely imitating the original design. The roof is plain tiled, although one side has been renewed with concrete tiles.
On the first storey, there are two original windows with wooden frames and ovolo-moulded mullions, which were formerly fitted with leaded glazing. On the garden side, the windows are identical but are blind, with a brick wall behind the mullions that has been rendered and painted to mimic leaded glazing; this arrangement may be original. The stable features an original stable door with a heavy frame. Above this door is an external door leading to the granary, which has remnants of a wooden platform and hoist, possibly indicating a 19th-century alteration.
