Description

Rowan House is a former farmhouse, now divided into two cottages, located in Wilby. The smaller of the two cottages retains original features. The house mainly dates to the late 16th century, with alterations made in the early 19th century. The structure is timber-framed and plastered, with the front and rear ground floors faced in red brick. It has a thatched roof and is two storeys high with an attic.

The front of the house has two ground-floor two-light casement windows set within segmental arches, and two first-floor windows, one two-light and one single-light, all dating to the 19th century. There are two 19th-century boarded doors. There are external stacks at each gable end. A good-quality timber frame is largely concealed within the left cottage, and there is evidence of many original windows. In each gable is the remnant of a six-light mullion and transom window, with cavetto mullions, which are now blocked.

Internally, the house retains an original newel staircase with two flights. The roof is largely original, featuring clasped and butt purlins, cranked wind-bracing, and evidence of original dormers. There is no clear indication of the original heating system, but it likely featured a stack set against the rear wall.
