Description

Hunston Cottage is a house from the early 17th century, possibly with an earlier core. It has one storey and attics, featuring a three-cell lobby-entrance plan. The structure is timber-framed and plastered, with a raised panel above the entrance displaying 18th-century pargetted figures of a pair of gryphons. A larger panel above the parlour window to the left has eight raised fleur-de-lys. The two remaining windows also have similar panels with a uniform pattern of restored cable and fan designs. The roof is covered with plain tiles and has three 19th-century gabled dormers fitted with horizontally-sliding small-pane sash windows.

An early 17th-century axial chimney made of red brick is notable for its unusual design, featuring an oblong plinth with a moulded cornice, a square central shaft, and attached triangular shafts on either side. The right gable has a similar chimney, but with twin diagonally-set square shafts. The house has mid-19th-century casements with 20th-century boarded shutters. There is a 20th-century doorway in the lobby-entrance position, which has a boarded and battened door with a dentilled cornice and arched head. To the right, there is a lower and later range that was detached until the 19th century, partly painted in 19th-century red brick that encases earlier timber-framing, also with a plain tiled roof. This range features a second 20th-century battened and boarded entrance door with an open gabled porch supported by posts. The interior has not been examined.
