Description

The Old Cottage is a house dating from the 16th century, with a porch and remodelling completed in 1619. It has one storey and attics, featuring a three-cell lobby-entrance plan. The building is timber framed, with the arch stud-braced wall framing exposed externally in the 20th century, and plaster infill panels. The roof is thatched and includes eyebrow casement dormers. There is an axial chimney made of red brick from the 17th century. The cottage has 2-light casements from the 18th century with leaded lights, some of which were replicated in the mid-20th century.

A notable feature is the fine two-storey entrance porch, dated 1619. This porch is timber-framed and plastered, with exposed framing. The first storey jetties on three sides, showcasing exposed joist ends and billet-carved bressumers. The gable tie-beam is also jettied and carved with delicate cresting, featuring a panel in the centre that displays the date 1619. There are drop finials of cage form at each corner and below the ridge, along with carved contemporary bargeboards. Above the entrance is a shallow oriel window that is ovolo-moulded, with five lights above and below a transom, and there are three-light windows in the side walls. The entrance has a pair of mid-20th century doors with two fielded panels. To the right of the main structure is an 18th-century single-bay extension.
