Description
This building is a barn located at the junction with Church Lane, including a wall to the south and a wall adjoining number 5 Broad Street. The barn dates from the late 17th century and is timber-framed, clad with late 19th-century red brick. It features a roof that is both plaintiled and pantiled and is a single storey in height.
On the west side, there is a timber loading door, a plank pedestrian door, a late 20th-century garage door, and two late 19th-century three-light cross casements separated by a brick pier. The barn has a dentil eaves cornice and a gabled roof. The north gable end has one late 19th-century three-light cross casement on the ground floor and a two-light casement above.
Inside, the timber frame is of moderate scantling, with many timbers replaced using reused materials of various dates. A 19th-century brick wall with rounded coping connects the north gable to number 5 Broad Street. This barn is part of a significant group of buildings in Castle Street and is included for its group value.
