Description
York Cottage is a house dating from the mid-17th century, with later alterations. It features a plastered and colourwashed timber frame and a roof made of black-glazed pantiles. The building has a lobby-entrance plan and stands two storeys high with a two-window range. A central door from the 20th century is flanked by late 20th-century three-light casements on both the ground and first floors. Above the door, there is a scrolled pargeted relief, also of late 20th-century origin. The roof is gabled with a central ridge stack.
Inside, the timber frame includes straight corner braces and jowled principal posts. There is an early 18th-century plank cupboard door to the right of the stack, mounted on cockshead hinges. The eastern bridging beam is of early 17th-century style but is not in its original position. In the east room, there is a late 17th-century three-plank door on strap hinges, along with a similar door to the attic. The first-floor passage features re-used small-framed panelling from the 17th century and has a clasped purlin roof.
