Description
The YMCA Club, located at 169 and 171 Norwich Road, is an impressive pair of semi-detached houses built in the early to mid-19th century. Constructed from grey gault brick, the buildings feature stucco quoins and dressings. The main block consists of three storeys, flanked by two side wings, each with two storeys. The main block has four windows, while each side wing has two. The windows are double-hung sashes, with single vertical glazing bars; the windows in the north-west wing also have glazing bars. The central block's windows are adorned with stucco architraves on the first and second storeys, and the ground storey features stucco pilasters with a frieze and segmental pediments. A stucco band runs along the second storey at window sill level, and the side wings have projecting stucco entrance porches. The roofs are hipped and covered with slate, featuring a modillion eaves cornice with an ornamented frieze beneath, and a large rectangular chimney stack at the center. The building is part of a group that includes Nos 121 to 127 (odd) and Nos 139 to 185 (odd), along with Nos 120 to 152 (even), Nos 156 to 162 (even), and Nos 168 and 168B.
