Description

A pair of houses dating from 1862, designed by Samuel Baldiston. The houses are constructed of white brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with slate roofs. The three-storey central block is divided by central and side pilasters into two bays, with one window on each floor. Ground floor Venetian windows have a central unhorned 3/2 sash with margin lights, with 2/2 unhorned side sashes. A moulded string course runs along the first floor. Two 6/6 unhorned sashes are found on the first floor, each with a stuccoed hood on brackets. Smaller 3/3 unhorned sashes are located under the eaves, interrupting the dentilled eaves course. The roof is hipped with a central stack. Two-storey extensions, set back from the main elevation, flank the central block, each featuring two bays. The inner bays have a six-panelled door beneath a stuccoed arch with a plain fanlight. Outer bays are lit by a 6/6 unhorned sash within a stuccoed head on brackets. A similar window is positioned above, with a reduced stuccoed head and a smaller arched sash above the doorway. These extensions have a hipped roof with a stack on their side slope. 20th-century garage extensions have been added to the side blocks. The rear elevation is in red brick and displays two eccentric centre gables and a gabled extension projecting northwards to the right and left. The interior features an entrance hall with an archway, a staircase with turned balusters and a ramped and wreathed handrail, doors with six sunk panels, plain marble fireplaces and some of painted stone with original cast iron and tiled grates.
