Description
This is a detached house built in 1875 by Frederick Barnes, who designed it for his own residence. The builder was J Pells & Son. The house is constructed of white brick with slate roofs. It features a strong design with a deliberately asymmetrical north front. The front is divided into three parts. The central section has a panelled and glazed front door recessed behind an elliptical stone arch supported by pilasters. Above this is a pierced brick balustrade forming a balcony, which is accessible from a sash window with glazing bars. The eaves extend over the right-hand part of the elevation, which has a small gable to the roof. This section has two horned sashes to the ground floor, each with margin glazing and set within segmental arches. Above, there is a single 1/1 horned sash under a segmental arch, set within a projecting entablature. The left-hand part of the elevation is a triangular bay that projects to a point, with each of its two faces lit by a segmental sash with margin glazing. A pierced brick balcony is above, accessible from an arched sash with margin glazing. A large open pediment sits over this bay. The roofs are gabled. The east-facing return has two external stacks rising to tall, decorated flues, two sashes to each floor in varied forms, and an oval first-floor window. The interior was not inspected.
