Description

156 and 158 Norwich Road are a pair of houses built around 1840. They are constructed from white brick with red brick returns and feature slate roofs. The buildings are two storeys high with a basement and have a four-window range, with entrances located in rebated one-bay wings on either side. The facade is divided by a central pilaster, with additional pilasters at each end. The windows are 6/6 unhorned sashes set under gauged skewback arches. There are 20th-century area railings present. The hipped roof has a central common stack. The entrance bays on the sides have steps leading up to four-panelled doors, which are topped with plain fanlights and set in stuccoed surrounds. Each house has a recessed 6/6 unhorned sash window at the first floor, also under gauged skewback arches, and these side bays are topped with hipped roofs. Attached to the right and left are former carriage houses, with the one at No.158 featuring original double timber doors and a pedestrian door that leads to a passage at the rear. The carriage houses have gabled roofs. The rear elevation shows a six-window range under double shallow hipped roofs, with 6/6 unhorned sashes under segmental arches. The service wing at the rear of No.156 remains, while the corresponding wing for No.158 has been demolished.

Inside No.158, there is a stick-baluster staircase, although the balusters for all but the basement flight have been replaced in the 20th century with turned balusters. The interior also features four-panelled doors, plain plaster cornices, ceiling roses, and two plain marble fireplaces.
