16, Fonnereau Road

This is a house dating from around 1850, located in Ipswich. It was later divided into four flats in the late 20th century. The house is constructed of white brick with a slate roof and is three storeys high, plus a basement. It is an example of Italianate architecture. The facade has a four-window arrangement, with a four-storey square tower containing the entrance on the left side. The tower has a rusticated ground floor. The entrance features a half-glazed door under a deep arched hood supported by pilasters with consoles, and a side window to the north without glazing bars. String courses divide each floor. First and second floors have arched sash windows with single panes, set within stuccoed architraves. The top floor has triple arched sash windows with single panes to all four sides, separated by columns. A cornice runs below the hipped roof, supported by console brackets. The quoins on the east side of the tower are rusticated and vermiculated. Basement windows were replaced in the late 20th century. The ground floor has three windows with single panes and arched heads, separated by unfluted columns on bases. The first floor has three arched sash windows with elaborated architraves, and the second-floor cornice continues from the tower. The attic storey features three arched casements. Wide eaves are supported on alternating large and small consoles. The roof is hipped, with an internal gable-end stack to the south and other stacks to the rear. A late 19th-century conservatory with a hipped roof is attached to the south return. The interior remains uninspected. The house is part of a group of notable buildings along Fonnereau Road.
