Description
This is a barn located immediately to the north of Shoe Devil Farmhouse, dating from the 16th and 17th centuries. It is timber-framed and weatherboarded, topped with a corrugated iron roof. The barn consists of five bays, with the three western bays forming the original structure, featuring a high entry in the middle bay. The barn has substantial, widely spaced full-height studs and trusses with straight tie-beams. Unusually long arched braces are morticed low into the posts, and similar long braces are halved into the studding of the end walls. The roof over these three bays is a queen-post design, with the queen-posts braced to the purlins on one side only.
The two eastern bays were added in the early 17th century and originally included an upper floor, which has since been removed. This section featured a range of diamond-mullioned windows, for which there are housing in the north and south wallplates and in the tie-beam at the east end. The posts of the open truss have empty mortices for the window sills. The roof over these two bays also has three bays with two rows of stepped butt purlins and arched braces to the tie-beam. It is likely that these two bays were added for use as a workshop.
