Description

ILKETSHALL ST. MARGARET SHOE DEVIL LANE TM 38 NE 2/41 Barn immediately to - the north of Shoe Devil Farmhouse GV II

Barn. C16 and C17. Timber-framed and weatherboarded with corrugated iron roof. 5 bays. The 3 western bays form the original barn, with a high entry in the middle bay. Very substantial widely-spaced full height studs; trusses with straight tie-beams and unusually long arched braces morticed very low down into the posts. Similar long braces are halved into studding in the end walls. Queen-post roof in 3 bays, with the queen-posts braced to the purlins on one side only. The 2 eastern bays were added in the early C17, and originally had an upper floor, now removed, and a range of diamond-mullioned windows, for which there are housing in the north and south wallplates and in the tie-beam at the east end, while the posts of the open truss have empty mortices for the window sills. This part of the roof, in 3 bays, has 2 rows of stepped butt purlins. There are arched braces to the tie-beam. It seems likely that these 2 bays were added for a workshop of some sort.
