Description

Pyes Hall is a farmhouse with a core dating from the mid-16th century, which has undergone significant modernisation and has various rear additions. The original timber frame is now completely encased in late 18th-century red brick, and it has a plain tiled roof. The building has two storeys and an attic, featuring a main range with a projecting cross wing to the left. The main range has three windows, which are mid-20th century three-light large-paned mullion and transom casements set under flat brick arches. The cross wing also has similar windows, but they are under segmental arches. There are two doorways with six-panel doors that have glazed top panels, and a brick dentil eaves cornice adds to the exterior detailing.

Notable external features include two internal stacks, each with groups of three and four detached octagonal flues that have moulded bases. Inside, one ground floor room in the main range features ornamental plasterwork, likely from the late 17th century, with the ceiling divided into two halves, each having moulded cornices and a cartouche set within a square panel; one cartouche is bisected by a later panelled partition. Another room contains a roll-moulded floor beam that appears to have been shortened in the 19th century when the staircase lobby was created. The 19th-century straight stairs have pierced finials on the newel posts.
