Description
The Wrentham War Memorial is located in the churchyard of the Church of St Nicholas, which is a Grade I-listed building, and is near the Grade II-listed Rectory, Church Corner Cottage, Church Room, and Crossways Cottage. The memorial features a Celtic cross adorned with detailed interlace patterns carved in relief on both the cross-head and cross-shaft. It is set on a tapering pedestal designed to resemble a rocky outcrop, topped with a narrow cap and featuring an inscription panel on both the front and rear. Made of pale grey granite, the memorial stands approximately 2.7 meters tall.
The main dedicatory inscription, made with applied metal lettering, states: "THIS CROSS WAS ERECTED BY THE REV./ E.R. YERBURGH, RECTOR OF WRENTHAM,/ IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF WRENTHAM/ WHO DIED FOR FREEDOM AND HONOUR/ IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918./ ARMY (18 NAMES) NAVY (8 NAMES)." The inscription on the rear reads: "ARMY/ (3 NAMES)/ 1939-1945/ (11 NAMES)."
