Description
The Lychgate at Kirkley Cemetery is a lychgate built in 1880 by JL Clemence. It features random stone with stone dressings and timber framing, topped with a plain-tile pyramidal roof, showcasing the Arts and Crafts style. The structure has a square plan, with stone walls on either side of the carriageway that have returns. The walls towards the center create a gateway on the London Road side, while the others provide support for curved braces. Above these walls is an intricate timber-framed superstructure, with some square panels filled with decorative woodwork, including simple panel tracery and quatrefoils. The roof is topped with a bellcote. This lychgate is part of a group with the North Eastern and South Western Chapels. It is a large and elaborate structure.
