Description
The Roman Catholic Church of St Nicholas, formerly known as the South Cliff Congregational Church, is located on Pakefield Road in Kirkley, Lowestoft. Built between 1900 and 1903, with an extension added in 1949, it was designed by G. Baines in the Arts and Crafts style. The church is constructed of red brick with stone dressings and features a slate roof with terracotta flashings.
The building includes a nave, chancel, and a small ritual south-west tower. The windows are designed in the Perpendicular style and have hoodmoulds. The west end showcases a prominent 7-light window, with jambs that rise above the gable as small pinnacles. To the left, there is a miniature octagonal tower topped with an ogee roof and a finial. The right side features a three-stage tower with diagonal buttresses, single-light windows, bell chamber openings, an ornamental parapet, and an inset spirelet. Both sides of the nave are similar, with an elaborate porch added to the north. The windows on the sides include both three-light and four-light designs, the latter set in paired transept-like gables. The roof is adorned with an octagonal lantern and a fleche, and there are extensions to the east.
Inside, the church has arcades formed by tapering posts, a false hammerbeam roof, and a boarded ceiling. Naturalistic foliage corbels are present at the transept arch.
