Description

This is a house built in 1911 by Ralph Scott Cockrill, demonstrating the Arts and Crafts style. It is constructed of rendered and pebbledashed brick with plain tile roofs. The house is one storey high with attic rooms. The asymmetrical front elevation features two prominent, full-height, gabled projections; the northern one contains the main entrance. There are mullioned windows with leaded lights throughout. The roof is deeply gabled, with a stack rising through the eastern slope. Wide, overlapping gables, also lit by leaded casements, flank the gabled ranges. Twin external stacks are positioned to clasp flat-topped dormers. The rear elevation showcases a pattern of repeating gablets at the first-floor level, above a terrace with continuous mullioned casements. The architect’s work is clearly influenced by contemporary developments at Letchworth and Hampstead Garden Suburb, and it is one of two houses on Kirkley Park Road, the other being number 7. The house is a notable example of the work of a significant local architect.
