Description

Kirkley Cliff Terrace is a terrace of 19 houses originally constructed in 1870 and attributed to John Louth Clemence. The terrace is built of gault brick, with cast-iron balconies and slate roofs.

The terrace was originally planned with 19 houses, each having three storeys over lower ground basements. The northern end pavilion and the central three houses are four storeys high, and the central section and end pavilions project slightly forward. The front elevation faces east towards the sea. The ground floor is rusticated, and each house features a two-storey canted bay window which rises from the basement level. A porch entrance is reached via a flight of steps from a small front garden. Some of the canted bays are topped with pediments. Running along the first floor is a continuous balcony with cast-iron railings, supported by scrolling cast-iron brackets. A dentilated eaves cornice runs along the top of the elevation. The attic storey has dormer windows with segmental arches, cogged brick cornices and consoles. Number 10, in the centre of the terrace, is double-fronted with canted bays extending to the eaves.

The north and south elevations have minimal window openings but retain much of the brick detailing of the front elevation. The rear (west) elevation features pedimented closet wings with two-storey outshuts and garden plots, some of which have been built upon. The rear of number 10 has seen particularly extensive extensions. Most houses remain surrounded by 19th-century flint garden walls with brick piers.
