Description

The South Western Chapel at Kirkley Cemetery is a cemetery chapel built in 1880 by JL Clemence. It features random stone construction with stone dressings and a roof made of alternating bands of plain and fishscale tiles. Designed in the Early English style, the chapel has stepped angle buttresses and coped gables. The simple nave includes four small lancet windows on the sides and a north porch. The east end has three tall lancet windows above a continuous blind arcade. A bellcote is situated on the western end gable, beneath which is a row of three lancets above a lean-to bier shed, although the doorway to this shed is now blocked. The chapel forms a group with the northeastern chapel and the lychgate nearby.
