Description
27 Market Place is a building with traces of a 15th and 16th-century structure, traditionally believed to have been a Benedictine Hospital. The main part of the building dates from the 17th century and is two storeys high with an attic, featuring three pedimented dormer casements. The mid-19th-century shop front is complemented by a 16th-century carriageway on the left, which has a four-centred wooden arch with carved spandrels. Behind this archway are two older posts that are moulded and act as stop-chamfers, one post features a crudely carved pestle and mortar, while the other has a retort. The main front above the shop is constructed of brick, lined with stucco to resemble ashlar, and has a plain tile roof. There are five sash windows at the first floor, each with glazing bars and flush frames.
Inside, the entrance hall and front room are fully panelled but have been converted into a shop. A fine 17th-century oak staircase features triple concave spiral turned balusters for each tread, with carved console step ends. The radial bar arched fanlight above the doorway to the staircase remains intact.
The Market Place Wine Shop and Nos 25 to 29, which are consecutive, form a group with this building.
