Description
25 and 26 Market Place is a later 19th century brick building that stands three storeys tall, topped with a hipped slate roof and featuring a bracketed eaves board. The front is made of gault brick, with a decorative band and rusticated quoins. It has a total of ten double-hung sash windows across the upper two storeys. A cornice with paired brackets runs above the entire ground floor. Number 25 has rusticated detailing, with arched heads over the two central windows, an entrance doorway on the right, and a cart entrance on the left. Number 26 features a modernised shop front with two entrances. The upper storey windows have moulded surrounds, with the two side windows of Number 25 having arched heads, and four first-floor windows topped with flat cornice heads on carved brackets. This building is prominently located on the north side of the Market Place and is a significant part of the town's main scene. The Market Place Wine Shop and numbers 25 to 29 form a group, and numbers 25 and 26 also group with number 42, the King's Arms, on the Thoroughfare.
