Description

Beacon Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the mid 16th century to the early 17th century. It is two storeys tall and features a timber frame with a rendered front, where the main posts are left exposed and there are traces of simple pargetting. The rear wall and the south-west end are faced in 19th-century red brick and are colour-washed. The roof is covered with pantiles, and there are two chimney stacks with plain red brick shafts.

The farmhouse boasts an impressive set of early 17th-century mullion-and-transome windows, primarily four-light, featuring ovolo moulded mullions and chamfered transomes, with pintle hinges. On the ground floor at the south-west end of the front, there is a three-light diamond mullioned window. Also from the same period is an enclosed and gabled red brick porch, which has a moulded lintel above the rectangular doorway and a fine ledged and battened door.

The building's frame consists of six bays. At the north-east end of the front, two main posts support sawn-off sections of an earlier and lower wallplate, which have been raised later, resulting in a noticeable difference in the upper floor level inside the house. The main entrance door, which was formerly part of a cross-entry, opens directly into a two-bay room that features a fine moulded ceiling, with multiple roll-mouldings on the main beam and a single roll on the joists. The open fireplace in this room has a plain timber lintel.
