Description

Burkett’s Farmhouse is a former farmhouse dating from the mid-17th century and later into the 17th century. It is timber-framed and largely encased in red brick dating to the 19th century, with a clay tile roof. It features one internal chimney stack and one end chimney stack, both with simple red brick shafts. There are four 3-light casement windows with segmental arched heads to frames and surrounds, all added in the 19th century. Two large, flat-roofed dormers were added in the 20th century. An enclosed, gabled porch with half-glazed panels is also a later addition. The internal framing is exposed.

The original house was built with five bays, presenting a three-cell plan and an internal stack. It is notable for having a two-bay unheated room at the north end, and a single-bay room on each side of the chimney stack, a feature repeated on the upper floor. The original upper ceilings have joists set on edge. There are six-light diamond-mullioned windows in each gable of the attic space; the south gable window is blocked by a late 17th-century two-bay extension that mirrors the style of the main house and added a room on each floor. The roof is in nine bays, with principals and slightly stepped butt purlins.
