Description
Walpole Old Chapel is a Congregational chapel that originally began as a dwelling, likely built in the mid-16th century. It is said to have been first used as a chapel in 1647 and was extended at the rear around 1700. The building features a timber frame with plaster and some red brick casing on the left gable end, topped by a double-span roof that is mainly covered with plain tiles.
The chapel has two windows with various mullioned casements and two four-panel doors. Notably, the right gable end showcases a fine 16th-century seven-light moulded mullioned window with a carved lintel, while the left gable end has another mullioned window with diamond-leaded glass. At the rear, there are two large semi-circular headed windows from around 1700, featuring square-leaded panes, some of which are original.
Inside, the valley roof is supported by three circular timber columns, two of which are in two stages and are said to resemble ships' masts. A tiered gallery wraps around three sides of the interior, supported by square columns and two barley sugar wrought iron posts on one side. The floor is made of brick. The furnishings and fittings date primarily from the late 18th to early 19th centuries, including a well-crafted hexagonal pulpit with an ogee roof and a ball finial, an 18th-century six-branched candelabrum, and panelled entrance lobbies. There are eleven box pews on the ground floor, with the remaining seating consisting of simple benches.
