Description
This is a house and shop, prominently situated on a corner plot, dated 1879 with the words 'Post Office' displayed above the main entrance. The building is constructed of colourwashed brick with a slated roof. It is two storeys and has an attic. The facade is symmetrical across the corner, featuring five bays arranged 2:3:1:3:2, with the corner bay projected and chamfered to create the main shop entrance. Brick pilasters divide the bays, and these are rusticated at ground floor level. A moulded cornice runs along the first floor, while the eaves overhang on shaped brackets. Large-paned sash windows are set beneath broad, segmental stuccoed arches with decorative keys. Each bay has a gabled half-dormer window with a semi-circular headed sash. The bays to either side of the entrance have cast iron shop fronts, each with three arched lights, barley-sugar columns with acanthus capitals, and openwork ornament within the spandrels. The shop fronts feature an embellished cast iron frieze. Twin half-glazed entrance doors are surmounted by a segmental fanlight. The building is notable for its group value and the quality of its shop fronts, characteristic of the period.
