Description

The Gables is a farmhouse dating from the late 16th century to early 17th century, with the northern end likely being older. It features a timber frame with plastering, a weatherboarded north gable, and a red brick south gable, topped with a pantiled roof. The building is two storeys high with an attic and consists of a single long range.

There are four windows, primarily casements with diamond leaded panes, including one ground floor window that has diagonal leadwork with a central cross. To the left side, four windows are coupled together. The entrance has a four-panel door, with the upper two panels glazed, and is adorned with a frieze and a cornice supported by console brackets. There is also a blocked four-panel raised and fielded door on the right side and a half-glazed door leading to a workshop on the left.

At the first floor level on the right side, there are two bands of pargetting featuring a honeysuckle design, similar to that found on two houses at Theberton and Hemp Green in Sibton. Inside, there are two internal stacks, with the main stack rebuilt in the mid-20th century. The interior boasts original newel stairs, many original internal doors, two four-centre arched brick fireplaces with rusticated surrounds, and a blocked first-floor three-light mullion window that retains its original glass.
