Description
The Gatehouse at Cockfield Hall is a Grade II* listed building dating from the mid-16th century. It has a rectangular plan with a staircase projection at the rear and is constructed of red brick, which was formerly plastered, with a plaintile roof. The building stands two storeys tall and features a symmetrical facade facing north. On the ground floor, there is a window on each side of the entrance arch, with a single window above. The windows are mullion and transom casement types, fitted with diamond leaded panes, and have splayed reveals and square hood moulds. The entrance arch is a four-centre moulded design with a square hood mould above it.
The gatehouse is topped with crowstepped gables, each of which has an external stack featuring a single circular flue adorned with moulded brick ornamentation, although the caps are missing. The shoulders of the stacks also exhibit further crowstepping. Inside the entrance arch, there is a recess that holds a terracotta bust of a man dressed in 16th-century attire; this bust was relocated from Westwood Lodge in Blythburgh. The first floor retains original panelling and includes one stone fireplace. Notably, unusual wood corbels in the shape of carved heads have been added to support the end roof trusses.
