Description
The gate piers, gates, and railings at the south gateway of Cockfield Hall were built in the mid-19th century. The gate piers are made of ashlar stone and are square in shape, featuring a pyramidal cap, a cornice, shallow buttresses on each side, and a plinth.
Between the two gate piers, there is a vehicular gate and a side-hung pedestrian gate on each side. The gates have a top rail adorned with arrow-head finials and lower urn-shaped finials in between. Below the top rail, there are intermediate railings topped with fleur-de-lis finials over a round-arched mid-rail. The bottom rails enclose oblong shapes between each railing, also topped with arrow-head finials. The vehicular gate is hung on the right side, while the pedestrian gates are hung on the gate piers. A kissing gate was added to the north-west gate, likely in the late 20th century, and it does not match the design of the original gates.
The railings extend from the south-east pedestrian gate along the south side of the east lodge and are in the same style as the gates. They stand on a low brick plinth and feature arrow-head finials and lower urn-shaped finials, similar to the gates. The top rail is supported by round-arched braces between each railing, and every sixteenth railing has an anthemion finial. The railings are further supported by sweeping braces from the rear and include a discreet side-hung pedestrian gate located south of the lodge.
