Description

Ridleys is a house dating from the late 16th century. It is timber-framed with colourwashed render and a plain tiled roof, which may have originally been thatched. The building has two storeys and follows a baffle-entry plan. The entrance front features two bays and has a projecting central porch, which is either 18th or 19th century, with a gabled roof and a plank door that has muntins and strap hinges. On either side of the porch are two 19th or 20th century two-light casement windows, with two similar windows located on the first floor. A chimney stack made of white bricks is positioned to the right of the centre, designed in the late 16th century style, with a rectangular base and two octagonal shafts topped with moulded caps. To the right is a recessed gabled wing that includes a single-light window with a Tudor hood mould. The right gable end has an outshut on the ground floor with a two-light window and a two-light attic window, while the left end features two slight windows on the ground and attic levels. The rear of the house is obscured by 20th century additions, including a projecting gabled wing on the left. Inside, the walls are close studded, with plain joists and encased beams in one ground floor room. The beams have chamfered ogee end stops and chamfered joists with die-out end stops. There are massive hearths with chamfered bressumers and a winder staircase leading to the first floor, which has jowled wall posts and wind bracing in the attic.
