Description

Sotherton Hall, originally Socherconhall Farmhouse, is a timber-framed and plastered farmhouse. It dates to the late 16th and early 17th centuries, with the addition of an 18th-century dairy wing set forward to the left and linked by a short passage. The main range has a front roof covered with plain tiles and a rear roof of black pantiles, while the linking passage is finished with glazed black pantiles. The house is two storeys high with an attic and follows a two-cell plan. It has three windows, featuring large-paned sash windows in flush frames; the ground-floor window on the left has a decorative surround with pilasters and entablature. The front door is a six-panel design with glazed upper panels, pilasters, and an entablature. A tall internal stack is present, combining four flues in a sawtooth pattern, with projecting shaped bricks at the base. The dairy wing has a shaped brick gable end, now plastered, incorporating an internal stack. A gabled staircase wing extends to the rear. Inside, a ground-floor fireplace has stone jambs and an arched wooden lintol, while a similar arched stone fireplace is found on the first floor. The staircase retains a section of 17th-century turned balustrading, and some exposed studwork is visible on the first floor.
