Description
The Church of St Andrew is a parish church that was rebuilt in 1854 in the Decorated style, using materials from the earlier medieval structure. It features a nave, chancel, south porch, and north vestry, constructed from random flint rubble with stone dressings and has plaintiled roofs. The church has a three-bay nave with two-light windows, and at the west end, there is a simple gabled stone bellcote. The chancel has two bays.
Inside, there is a notable 15th-century seven-bay arched-braced nave roof with an enriched cornice, which was re-framed in the mid-19th century when angels were added at the foot of each wall post. The north and south nave walls have arched recesses, likely from the 14th century, though they have been extensively restored. The north recess houses a late 13th-century recumbent stone effigy of a knight, believed to be Walter de Bernham.
The church also contains a 15th-century octagonal font, with panels on the bowl carved with alternating blank shields and flowers, featuring fleuron-enriched borders, and is unusually well preserved. The font's stem, supported by four lions, may be a 19th-century copy of the original. Additionally, there is an early 17th-century pyramidal font cover with a pierced finial. The vestry door includes two fine painted panels with gesso work, said to be from the former rood screen, depicting St. John the Evangelist and St. Mary Magdalene.
